FAQ Related to Service on the Nominations Committee

(April 2009)

What does the Nominations Committee do?

The Nominations Committee develops slates of candidates for ASCD's General Membership and Leadership Council elections. It forms right after Annual Conference. Members meet at ASCD headquarters for a two-day training session in the fall (attendance is mandatory for both committee members and any alternates). They meet again for three days, beginning the Thursday before Annual Conference, to develop a slate of candidates for ASCD's General Membership and Leadership Council elections, and usually attend the "Meet the President-Elect" Candidates Forum the Sunday of Annual Conference.

Who serves on the committee and how do you get there?

The Nominations Committee consists of at least 12 members appointed jointly by the Board of Directors and the Leadership Council. Leadership Council members receive information on qualifications for service on the committee along with a nomination form in early January. Qualifications for office include

  • Membership in ASCD;
  • A minimum of three years of service in a leadership role (past membership on the Board of Directors, current or past membership on the Leadership Council, affiliate executive director, graduate of the Emerging Leaders program, network facilitator, president of connected community, etc.);
  • Commitment to attend committee meetings before and during a portion of Annual Conference; and
  • Interest in selecting highly qualified slates of members for office.

The Leadership Council Management Team reviews the list of applicants, provides additional names if necessary, and recommends an eight-member slate to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors receives the recommended list at its March meeting, and the Leadership Council votes to elect the eight-member slate at its March meeting.

Committee members may serve more than one term.

Does ASCD pay for meeting expenses?

ASCD picks up meal, hotel, and transportation costs related to the fall training session. Meal and hotel expenses are reimbursed by ASCD for the three-day meeting prior to Annual Conference. Nominations Committee members receive a $100 discount on their Annual Conference registration. If members of the committee are required by their employer to have a substitute to be absent from work, ASCD staff may authorize reimbursement to the employer at the employee’s approved daily rate.

How are the meeting dates determined?

Committee members determine the date of their fall training session. The committee meets again for three days on the Thursday and Friday just before Annual Conference, and at least part of the Saturday of Conference, to interview President-Elect and Board of Directors candidates and develop the formal slates of candidates for ASCD's two elections.

Why face-to-face meetings instead of using Skype or similar technology?

Former Nominations Committee members have acknowledged the value of face-to-face meetings in terms of team building and commitment to their charge.
