ASCD Sustainability Movement
Journey Toward "Going Green"
ASCD was awarded two Green Globes by the Green Building Initiative on May 11, 2009, as the result of more than two years of moving the ASCD headquarters building toward sustainability, or "going green." ASCD enjoys monthly cost savings because of the efforts, but the ultimate benefit is reducing our carbon footprint to benefit our community and our planet.
ASCD saved energy in the headquarters building by
- Replacing all incandescent light bulbs in the building that could be changed to compact fluorescent lights and switching all fluorescent tubes in the building to energy-saving bulbs.
- Placing flow restrictors on all faucets and showerheads.
- Reducing the hot water temperature by 10 degrees.
- Introducing automatic flush valves on toilets and urinals.
- Installing USGBC-approved electric hand dryers in the restrooms.
- Reducing heating and air-conditioning hours on weekends and holidays.
- Decreasing landscaping irrigation and increasing reliance on rainwater.
ASCD reduced the staff’s collective carbon footprint by
- Encouraging bicycle use with designated lockers, bike racks, and shower facilities.
- Supporting telecommuting.
- Investing in a robust recycling program.
- Requiring our janitorial vendor to use green cleaning agents and methods.
- Using higher-efficiency air filters in the building.
- Replacing our disposable coffee cups and paper towels with compost-ready and high-recycled-content alternatives.
