In Her Own Words: A Leadership Reflection

What has led to your development as a leader?

I always thoughts that the term "leader" in a school referred only to heads and principals. This misconception changed when I was recognized as a master teacher in 2008 for accomplishing the school mission in enriching the school community daily, catering for all children according to their age and a wide range of abilities and personalities, structuring the learning environment so that each individual child is able to experience success and feel valued and worthy.

It was then when I realized my role as a teacher leader. I started reading and exchanging ideas with some peers about teacher leadership and I noticed that I was developing ideas about myself as a teacher leader. I encourage colleagues to change, to do things they wouldn't ordinarily consider without the influence of a leader, creating an honest and open interaction, influencing to improve education practices, especially in applying technology tools in their daily lessons. For my students, I foster a joy for learning, making my passion for teaching obvious to them by creating dynamic and challenging learning environment that engages and motivates them, enabling all to be independent, competent, and creative thinkers and effective communicators and problem solvers.

All in all, I believe that teachers are the key to better education; schools need to provide them with the support and developmental resources they need to encourage change and to grow in this world of complexity and uncertainty.
