In Her Own Words: A Leadership Reflection

What has led to your development as a leader?

There are three key pieces that have influenced my development as a leader. First, I've had the opportunity to be involved in weekly professional development with my staff as both a learner and a coach. Together with my leadership team, we have developed a school improvement plan based on data, driven by professional development, and measured by student achievement. I am able to challenge and support teachers in their continual learning by having sound knowledge about curriculum and instruction through weekly professional development.

Second, I have been afforded the time to focus solely on instructional leadership through my participating in the School Administration Manager (SAM) project sponsored by the Wallace Foundation. The SAM handles managerial tasks so I can provide the instructional leadership and support that teachers need to attain high levels of student success.

Finally, the fact that I spent 22 years as a classroom teacher before becoming a principal has certainly given me a deep understanding and many experiences in working with students. I am able to draw on these experiences when working with parents and teachers as we continually strive to provide quality education for our students.
