In His Own Words: A Leadership Reflection

Describe the obstacles you face as a leader.

I serve as our district's supervisor of curriculum and instruction. In that role, I am the point person for the professional development of our teaching staff and have line authority over our eight discipline-specific content area supervisors.

In my 20 years serving as a school and district administrator, I have found that each year brings new obstacles. However, I think I can articulate one that seems to be perennial. We have not been able to maintain a strong culture of discipline. We continually struggle to have a critical mass of staff and administrators commit their time and energy to their own learning by reading, reflecting, and finally acting on research-based classroom strategies associated with gains in student achievement. I belive our staff and administrators should be focused and disciplined in their quest to be come the most effective teachers and administrators, continually striving for excellence in the development of curriculum, assessments, and instructional delivery.

Without a strong culture of discipline and a vibrant, sustained professional learning community, we struggle to make the transition from good to great.
