In His Own Words: A Leadership Reflection

What has led to your development as a leader?

Looking back, one major influence on my leadership development was the conversations I had with my peers, fellow teachers, and leaders. I am a research activist, a role that was created for me to lead in curriculum innovations in my school. I lead my colleagues to design and implement curriculum innovations as a team, using action research to support our work and improve existing practices. In my work, I observed that teachers around me often sought the stability of apathy amidst the tumultuous sea of educational change. I noticed that traditional classroom practices were often prioritized over the experimentation and implementation of more progressive, learner-centered practices.

Therefore, to prepare myself to lead, I learned from others and tapped into their valuable expertise and experiences. I sought opportunities to converse with every educator I came into contact with, seeking their views and opinions and refining my ideas and growing professionally. These interactions and deep conversations helped me understand the various roles I needed to take on to support my colleagues as we manage the onslaught of change together.

In my school, we believe that everyone is a leader and has expertise and experience. I am both a leader and a learner.
