In Her Own Words: A Leadership Reflection

What has led to your development as a leader?

Twenty years' experience in early-years classrooms has led to my passion of working with and meeting the needs of all children. Over the years, I have seen many changes affecting pedagogy, literacy, inclusion, and best practices. These positive changes continue to fuel my passion to better support lifelong learning for all children.

My passion has led me to pursue a position as an early learning and literacy support teacher. I continue to become more knowledgeable in the areas of literacy and child development. I feel that it is my professional obligation to share the knowledge in these areas with others; therefore, I have initiated many professional learning opportunities for my colleagues and taken a leadership role.

Over the last two years, my position as a support teacher and my passion for working with all children have helped me to develop as a leader. My belief is that consultation and collaboration are key components to a successful working relationship. All members of any group, both children and adults, want to feel that they are capable, connected, and able to contribute.

I continually look at teaching and how to improve it. I search for new ways of thinking and organizing so that students can be reached more effectively. My goal is to share these new ways of thinking with others in a leadership role.
