In His Own Words: A Leadership Reflection

What has led to your development as a leader?

A variety of experiences have led to the development of my leadership style. As a teacher and administrator, I have worked in rural, suburban, and urban schools. I have worked with students in grades K–12 and in very high- and very low-poverty areas. Working as a classroom teacher, resource teacher, elementary principal, middle-level principal, and curriculum director has provided me with a broad range of experiences. Each of these experiences has exposed me to diverse attitudes and ideas, helping to shape my leadership style.

Learning to manage and appreciate diversity has required flexibility on my part. I have learned that not everything has a simple answer, and that in disagreements the truth is often somewhere in the middle. I have learned that everyone, students and staff alike, responds best when treated with dignity and respect. I have learned that leadership is not only about knowledge and skill, but also the ability to develop positive relationship. It is about checking your ego at the door, and being willing to not only admit, but also learn from your mistakes.
