Supervising the Art and Science of Teaching in the 21st Century

Robert J. Marzano, ASCD Author and Educational Consultant, Centennial, Colo.

The book The Art and Science of Teaching provided a comprehensive framework for teaching that integrates the work found in three previous books: Classroom Instruction that Works, Classroom Management that Works, and What Works in Schools. The Art and Science of Teaching outlines 10 critical areas of instructional practice along with specific strategies for each area. This session addresses how administrators might supervise the art and science of teaching in a way that keeps the focus of attention on student learning (as opposed to use of specific instructional strategies) and allows individual teachers flexibility and creativity in their teaching practices. It also provides a new framework for lesson observation and lesson design that breaks lessons into basic segments, each with its own expectations regarding teacher behavior.

Helping Learning Leaders Succeed in the 21st Century

Pam Robbins, Educational Consultant, Mt. Crawford, Va.

Learning Leaders will need knowledge and skills in three key areas in order to thrive in the 21st century. As demands on the leader increase and resources decrease, the successful leader will need a working knowledge of the emotional side of leadership to inspire staff, students, and community members and to motivate them to perform well. Leaders in the 21st century will also need strategies to build inclusive, collaborative cultures where all students can find a learning haven. Finally, leaders will need a repertoire of powerful tools to enhance the quality of learning in the classroom and the quality of professional dialogue about teaching and learning. Participants in this session will have the opportunity to:

  • examine the concept of Primal Leadership;
  • practice techniques to read and positively shape culture;
  • analyze strategies to promote quality teaching;
  • discuss a student nexus model designed to promote continuous school improvement; and
  • network with colleagues.

Participants will leave the session with an array of practical strategies and a plan to structure their success in the 21st century.

Registration Fee: $249 (ASCD Members), $313 (Nonmembers)
