ASCD's Educational Leadership Magazine Starts the School Year with a Fresh Design and New Digital Format
Alexandria, VA (08/27/09)—ASCD's award-winning educator magazine Educational Leadership (EL) returns this issue year with a more modern design and a new user-friendly digital format. The online version of the magazine, which has the same excellent content but added digital functionality and distribution features, debuts today as a companion to the redesigned print EL.
ASCD members can view the entire magazine online, share up to 10 pages with an unlimited number of friends, post the issue to social networks, click live Web links to access additional resources, search the magazine for topics or keywords, and download the issue to a personal computer using Google Gears for offline reading.
"At ASCD, our mission is to continually adapt and grow our publications to meet the diverse needs of educators," ASCD Executive Director Gene R. Carter said. "Educational Leadership’s new redesign and digital format underscore our commitment to providing ASCD members with fresh content through a variety of sources. I am delighted that we can now offer immediate, worldwide accessibility to our award-winning EL content."
In addition to the online version, EL’s print version premieres a contemporary logo, streamlined design, and two new columns from renowned education researcher Robert J. Marzano and popular teacher blogger Bill Ferriter. The first issue of the new EL, which is on "Teaching for the 21st Century," explores how educators are responding to changes in school culture, curriculum, and technology. Prominent educators and experts contributed their opinions to the issue:
- Andrew J. Rotherham and Daniel Willingham critique the new reform movement
and explore ways to make it better.
- Cheryl Lemke and Ed Coughlin describe four key ways that technology is changing the nature of learning.
- Sir Ken Robinson reflects on the value of creativity.
- Yong Zhao exposes the need for global villagers.
"A magazine should be a complete package, with carefully selected content, beautiful design, and pacing and rhythm from cover to cover. Print and digital, that is what we are aiming to give to our readers," said EL’s Editor in Chief Marge Scherer. "In our coming issues, EL will tackle more themes of change. It’s all about valuing what we know is good while reaching for something even better."
In his first column, Ferriter urges professional educators to use Twitter to make "digital connections," and for the first time readers can now follow EL on Twitter (http://twitter.com/ed_leadership) to get the latest updates on content and authors. Readers can also answer a monthly question through EL Exchange or download Scherer’s podcast.
