Exceeding the Common Core Speaking Standards: Improving the Oral Communication of All Students

Recorded March 6, 2013

All teachers in all subject areas at all grade levels have their students speak in class. Digital tools available today showcase oral language, and speaking well is the number one skill employers seek. To respond to these realities, Common Core standards have been created to push us to give more emphasis to what has been an ignored language art.

In this webinar, Erik Palmer offers reasons to increase our emphasis on speaking and gives an overview of the requirements of the Common Core State Standards. Then he introduces a practical, multi-trait framework for understanding and teaching the skills involved in all effective oral communication. Palmer explains proven, successful strategies and activities that enable teachers to update activities they currently use to more purposefully and specifically teach students to be well-spoken in the classroom and beyond.
