Classroom Instruction That Works for English Language Learners

This session presents the nine categories of research-based instructional strategies first identified in Classroom Instruction That Works (Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock, 2001) through a filter of five stages of language acquisition. The result is applications that allow mainstream K–12 teachers to successfully engage ELLs.
The following information and strategies are covered: Introduction to the Research, Stages of Second Language Acquisition, Cues and Questions, Setting Objectives, Providing Feedback, Nonlinguistic Representations, and Summarizing.
In this workshop, participants will learn
- How McREL identified strategies to enhance student achievement.
- The importance of stages of second language acquisition and their instructional implications.
- Strategies for engaging English language learners in K–12 mainstream classrooms.
