About the Author

Award-winning educator Baruti K. Kafele has excelled as both teacher and principal for 20 years. As a classroom teacher of students in grades 4–8 in East Orange, New Jersey, he was selected as Teacher of the Year in both the East Orange School District and Essex County Public Schools. He was also selected for inclusion in Who's Who Among America's Teachers six times. As a principal, Kafele led the transformation of three different middle schools and one high school. His work at Sojourner Truth Middle School in East Orange helped to transform it into one of the highest performing urban middle schools in the entire state of New Jersey.

Kafele is currently the principal of Newark Tech High School in Newark, New Jersey, which is recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best high schools in the nation. He is also a national educational consultant, motivational speaker, and author of the bestselling books A Black Parent's Handbook to Educating Your Children (Outside of the Classroom) (1994) and A Handbook for Teachers of African American Children (2004).
