Revisiting Social Responsibility

A Responsible Investment

Marge Scherer

Social justice lessons rarely come ready-made. The issues are often wrapped in controversy and debate, and the active learning that results can lead in unexpected directions. But, as our authors suggest, teaching for social responsibility is most rewarding. Not only does it engage and inspire students as they explore new content and acquire new skills, but it also imparts to them—in the words of one author—"a personal investment in the well-being of people and the planet."

For the second time this publishing year (see also May 2009), EL authors look at effective and appropriate ways to teach social responsibility and citizenship. Here you will find a great book list for the coming year, some ideas about how to connect curriculum topics, ways to shape service learning. and guidelines for inspiring students to be responsible citizens. Enjoy, and let us know what you think.

As we end this publishing year, we offer a special bonus, an online list of all the articles published in Educational Leadership 2008–2009. Thanks to both readers and authors. See you in September, in print and online.
