Teaching AI: Exploring the New Frontiers of Learning by Michelle Zimmerman (ISTE, December 2018)
Siri. Chatbots. Spotify personalized playlists. Self-driving cars. Whether we realize it or not, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming part of our everyday lives. How can educators begin to prepare students—and themselves—for a future where AI is a major influence on society, jobs, culture, medicine, and more? Zimmerman's comprehensive book explores that critical question.
Whether you are an educator who embraces the idea of AI and its possibilities or one concerned about technology's "dark side," you will find Teaching AI helpful. Zimmerman offers up a very frank look at how AI can and will affect the future, showing both the great potential of computer intelligence and also the significant ethical, financial, and cultural challenges it will bring.
Zimmerman, an educator and researcher, examines how teachers can include AI in all content areas. She offers specific suggestions and examples of available AI tools, such as ALEKS, an AI platform that uses adaptive questioning to drill students in math; or Sway, which helps art students create professional portfolios. She also discusses the skills students will need as AI progresses—such as creativity, problem solving, and empathy—to be better prepared for jobs of the future.
But she also takes broader strokes—discussing why AI can tap into students' natural curiosity, how it can invoke rich classroom discussion about our future world, and why it is important to address, not ignore. "As technology advances, teachers must advance with it," she writes. Her book is an attempt at providing a roadmap to an uncertain destination, but at its heart, it advises that before students can work with machines, they must first "understand who they are as people."
