A New Leader for ASCD
Linda Mariotti has taken office as ASCD's new president. Mariotti is assistant superintendent for instructional services in the Granite School District in Salt Lake City, Utah. She began her education career teaching in California and Utah and has a strong background in working with both at-risk and gifted students. She also has served as assistant principal, principal, and district curriculum director.
Mariotti replaces Valerie Truesdale, superintendent of the Beaufort County Schools in Beaufort, South Carolina, and now immediate past president of ASCD. Sara Magaña Shubel, superintendent of the East Grand Rapids Public School District, East Grand Rapids, Michigan, is the new president-elect.
A Fresh Look
In an effort to clarify its mission and purpose, ASCD has completed an extensive rebranding process that has affected the organization's name, logo, and tagline. The new tagline—Learn. Teach. Lead.—more accurately describes what our members do and what the association wants to achieve. It also adds power to the core concept of ASCD as an association for educational leadership advancing best practices and policies for the success of each learner.
You'll see the new logo throughout your September 2009 Educational Leadership.
Stand Up for Whole Child Education
ASCD has launched the Whole Child Petition as a way for individuals to tell their state board of education to do more to educate the whole child by supporting policies and practices that ensure children are healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Once a state has reached 1,000 signatures, ASCD will deliver the petition to the state board of education. To date, more than 1,300 educators, parents and family members, administrators, community members, and business leaders have signed.
Sign the petition and then take the next step by recruiting your friends, colleagues, and community members to stand up for whole child education. To sign the petition and see the actions you can take to promote whole child education, go to www.wholechildeducation.org and click on Get Involved.
