Register Today for ASCD's Legislative Conference

ASCD's 2016 Leadership Institute for Legislative Advocacy (LILA) conference will be held January 24–26 in Washington, D.C. Attendees will also hear former Massachusetts Secretary of Education Paul Reville—a whole child champion—discuss the importance of strong policies that support the comprehensive needs of students.

ASCD, Whole Child, and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals

Recently the United Nations ratified the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—goals that all signatory countries are aiming to achieve by 2030. A key part was Goal 4, which focused on education: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
ASCD, along with its partners Education International and UNESCO, has been helping outline the meaning of a "quality education." Quality education encompasses quality teaching, quality teaching and learning tools, and quality learning environments. It echoes the Whole Child framework, which states that each child, in each school, and in each community deserves to be healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.

ASCD Members Selected for Teaching Ambassador Fellowships

Of the nine 2015–2016 Teaching Ambassador Fellowships the U.S. Department of Education recently announced, four were ASCD members: one full-time Washington Fellow and three Classroom Fellows. We congratulate Meredith Morelle from Washington, D.C.; Matthew Presser from New Haven, Connecticut; Mark Sass from Broomfield, Colorado; and Nancy Veatch from Cottonwood, California.
Now in its eighth year, the Teaching Ambassador Fellowship Program gives outstanding teachers an opportunity to learn about national policy issues in education while providing their expertise to inform policy discussions. The role is a paid position through which fellows share what they've learned across their professional networks, contributing to a larger understanding of federal initiatives in the profession while giving input into policy and programs designed to improve education.
