ASCD's Whole Child Network Launches at Empower19

This March in Chicago, ASCD will launch its latest initiative—one that harkens back to our mission of the past decade. In 2007, ASCD launched its Whole Child Initiative to ensure that each child, in each school, and in each community is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. ASCD is now launching its Whole Child Network to help schools—their teachers, families, and students—work in unison with their communities and with other schools across the globe in implementing and advancing a Whole Child approach to education.
In joining the ASCD Whole Child Network, your school will join a global network of schools focused on the same goals; engaged in the same processes; and with whose educators you can discuss issues, share insights, and exchange support. In addition, you will be able to use ASCD's Whole Child framework—its resources; professional learning tools and activities; and expertise in learning, teaching, and leading.
The Whole Child Network is based on ASCD's decade-long commitment to a Whole Child approach to education, supported by research from our Vision in Action Award-winning schools and ASCD's own three-year Whole Child Network of Schools Pilot Study (2012–15), conducted by the American Institutes of Research. Schools can expect that implementing a Whole Child approach will result in improved student achievement, health, attendance, behavior, social and emotional development, a sense of connectedness, and respect for student voice.

New from ASCD Videos

Reciprocal Teaching At Work

Called "the power reading vitamin," reciprocal teaching is a proven high-yield, low-prep scaffolded discussion technique that, when used twice a week, will give students two years growth in just one year. You can rent this video on http://streaming.ascd.org or purchase the DVD at http://shop.ascd.org.

Ask Them

The Facebook structure is based on "likes," Trip Advisor is worth over 2 billion dollars because they ask people to share their opinions, and Netflix uses a "thumbs up or down" rating system to encourage viewers to log their ratings. We live in a world where feedback from the user is essential information … but how often are we asking students for input about their own education? Based on the keynote address of educator Myron Dueck, Ask Them is a three-episode series exploring how asking students for their input transforms both student learning-and the dynamic between teacher and student—in amazing ways. Rent these videos on http://streaming.ascd.org.
Titles:"The Power of Asking Questions"; "There's No Such Thing as Average"; What We Need to Ask Students and How We Do It"

Inspiring Differentiation

Every teacher knows that students come to school with different background experiences, different interests, different personalities, and different levels of readiness for learning essential content. No two students are the same. Differentiated instruction helps teachers leverage student differences so they become pathways to academic success, rather than impediments to learning. "Inspiring Differentiation," a new video series featuring author and educational consultant Carol Ann Tomlinson, includes elementary school and secondary school editions, plus a glimpse of a high school taking its first "baby steps" toward differentiating instruction. Rent these videos on http://streaming.ascd.org.
Titles:"Inspiring Differentiation: Pre-Kindergarten and Elementary School"; "Inspiring Differentiation: Secondary School"; Inspiring Differentiation: High School"
