ASCD in Action

National Education Summit

ASCD President Joanna Kalbus and Executive Director Gene Carter joined fellow members of the Learning First Alliance (LFA), the nation's governors, and business leaders in the 1999 National Education Summit in September. Held in Palisades, New York, the Summit was sponsored by Achieve, Inc., a nonpartisan organization that serves as an education policy resource center on issues of standards, assessment, and accountability. Speakers and participants included President Bill Clinton and Education Secretary Richard Riley.
Summit brought together governors, business leaders, and education professionals from 50 states to discuss and explore the many challenges facing educators and policymakers as they work to implement standards and assessments. Through a series of discussion groups, town meetings, and technology demonstrations, the Summit provided leaders with tools to forge a consensus on improving U.S. schools. During the meeting, participants reviewed and revised a draft action statement that outlines specific commitments by each of the three major partners.
Although this was the third National Education Summit, it was the first to include educators as full partners. The first Summit was held in 1989, during which the nation's governors established the National Education Goals for the year 2000. A second Summit in 1996 focused on standards and their connection to education achievement.

Educating Minds and Hearts

Educators know that students' social well-being often leads to academic achievement and success in later life. In Educating Minds and Hearts: Social Emotional Learning and the Passage into Adolescence (1999), leading experts share practical insights into how to help students through adolescence and beyond. Edited by EL author Jonathan Cohen, the book helps teachers integrate the teaching of social and emotional skills with subjects and channel students' emotions into learning opportunities. Price: $18.95 (member); $21.95 (nonmember). Stock no. 199001.

Congratulations, Annual Conference

The 1999 ASCD Annual Conference, "Building Dynamic Relationships," won a Broken Record award from the San Francisco Convention Center and Tourist Bureau. The award symbolizes ASCD's record-breaking numbers to the Convention Center. We expect an even larger crowd at the 2000 Annual Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. For details on conference speakers and registration information, visit the ASCD Web site at www.ascd.org.

Safe Schools

ASCD continues to support activities that foster safe and productive learning environments for students. Through a collaboration with EchoStar, a project that provides satellite equipment to schools and develops school programming on safe schools, ASCD is planning program content and video footage for the programs. ASCD is also working with Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) America and National Families in Action to revise the D.A.R.E. program materials.
