October 2018 The Promise of Social-Emotional Learning
Much Love for EL and SEL
EL Magazine does it again! This issue on SEL is so timely and relevant.

The October issue is so on point! I'm sitting here reading all the articles. In particular, "Let's Take a Stand Against Sexual Harassment in Schools" [by Richard Weissbourd] is timely. Take a read.

Already one of my favorite issues. Loaded with so many good articles about many of the most important elements of education.

Be the Change
This article ["SEL for Adults" by Jill Harrison Berg] is just as powerful reading it the second time around. If we want our students to develop SEL, as the great Mohandas Gandhi said, we must "be the change we wish to see in the world," and, if I can respectfully add "in our building."

Empathy Tools
Great article ["Nine Competencies for Teaching Empathy" by Michele Borba]! My counselor was just teaching our students about empathy and used these principles.

Other Angles to Consider
Is the goal of education to improve student academic outcomes or achieve social goals? They are two different things and completely different professions.

Of course we need to treat students with respect and compassion. However, the greatest gift of a teacher is to teach the content they are hired to teach to send students into life as knowledgeable, capable, and caring young citizens.
