Frederick M. Hess is director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. A nationally recognized author and commentator on schooling, his books include Educational Entrepreneurship
(Harvard Education Press, 2006), Common Sense School Reform (Palgrave Macmillan, 2004), and
Spinning Wheels (Brookings Institution, 1998). You will find his research and writings in scholarly and popular periodicals, including Harvard Educational Review, Teachers College Record, Social Science Quarterly, Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan, Education Week, Washington Post, and U.S. News and World Report. He sits on the boards of directors of StandardsWork and the National Association of Charter School Authorizers, is executive editor of Education Next, and is a member of the review board for the Broad Prize in Urban Education.
A former high school social studies teacher, Hess holds an MEd in Teaching and Curriculum and an MA and PhD in Government from Harvard University. He has taught education and public policy at Harvard, Georgetown, and Rice Universities and at the Universities of Pennsylvania and Virginia.
