On this inaugural episode of the Educational Leadership Magazine’s Monthly Podcast, editor-in-chief Anthony Rebora is joined by Lee Ann Jung to discuss her article “Tear Down Your Behavior Chart!.” The article, which is co-authored by Dominique Smith, appears in the September 2018 issue, themed Classroom Management Reimagined. Jung explains how behavior charts and similar short-term compliance methods do not teach self-regulation. However, evidence shows that the public shame aspect of such methods is counterproductive and actually harms students.
“We don’t want students to follow directions because they fear punishment or shame. We want students to follow the routines of the school because they want to be a good citizen and because they see a responsibility to their fellow classmates and teachers,” Jung explains. “We want them to be driven by something internal, rather than fear.”
Lee Ann Jung is the founder of Lead Inclusion, a Clinical Professor at San Diego State University, and a consultant to schools worldwide.
