In Memoriam: Richard Elmore

We are sad to note the recent death of Richard F. Elmore, an influential figure in education scholarship and improvement and a valued contributor to Educational Leadership. Elmore was founding director of the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Doctorate of Educational Leadership program, a long-time faculty member at HGSE, and a respected writer and thinker. Among his contributions to education were the concept of instructional rounds and the delineation of the instructional core—the essential interaction between teacher, student, and content that creates the basis of learning.

Elmore wrote for EL on topics ranging from school choice ("No Easy Answers to the Complex Questions of Choice," January 1991) to the need to critically probe how instructional practices are organized ("Hard Questions About Practice," May 2002). His last EL article, in November 2003, detailed how the newly enacted NCLB act missed the mark on what years of research had shown would most help failing schools. His insights and writing will be missed.

EL’s experienced team of writers and editors produces Educational Leadership magazine, an award-winning publication that reaches hundreds of thousands of K-12 educators and leaders each year. Our work directly supports the mission of ASCD: To empower educators to achieve excellence in learning, teaching, and leading so that every child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
