What's Up with Those Squares?

Readers may be wondering what this odd-looking graphic is and why it has begun to appear in ASCD publications. It's a Quick Response (QR) code—a specific two-dimensional or matrix barcode readable by today's smartphones and dedicated QR scanners. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern.
A QR code works in much the same way as a bar code does, but it provides far more information, such as a web address, pricing, or comments. Using a QR code is comparable to clicking on a link in a digital publication. By enhancing our print publications with QR codes, we can share a relevant video, an interactive example, or expert commentary with readers who have smartphones.
Many of today's smartphones come equipped with a QR reader, but if your phone doesn't, you may need to download an application. All you need to do is scan the code with your smartphone; the application automatically reads the code and takes you directly to the content.
For more information about QR codes or to learn how to download an application to your smartphone, go to www.ascd.org/qrcodes.

Call for Candidates

Do you know a forward-thinking ASCD member with a passion to make a difference? Could this person be you? ASCD is seeking candidates from diverse backgrounds for governance positions. Elected leaders are responsible for ensuring that programs, products, and services focus on the success of learners and that ASCD resources are used wisely to promote ASCD values and guide the future direction of the association.
Consider nominating yourself or encouraging potential candidates to apply. The application form is available online at www.ascd.org/nominations. Please read the qualifications and time commitment for each position carefully. Should you have any questions, contact governance director Becky DeRigge at bderigge@ascd.org.

ASCD Releases Whole Child Indicators

Is your school meeting the needs of the whole child? How do you know? To help you ensure that each student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged, ASCD has developed descriptive indicators that give schools and communities a clear understanding of what a whole child approach to education looks like. Use the indicators to assess your school and community needs, set strategic goals, and guide your school improvement process.
Visit www.ascd.org/wholechildindicatorsto download indicators for each tenet as well as an additional set to support a sustainable, communitywide, whole child approach.

ASCD Announces New Online Membership Options

ASCD is proud to announce two new membership categories designed to serve individuals who prefer to receive their benefits electronically. Premium Online and Select Online memberships provide the same great benefits that current Premium and Select members receive. The key difference is that Premium Online and Select Online members enjoy their benefits, including books, completely online.
Online members can download the same member books that our "classic" Premium and Select members receive as soon as they become available. These online books are delivered in PDF format and can be read on a variety of e-readers as well as on the computer—perfect for educators on the go.
Online members are informed of their benefits each month in ASCD Delivers, our new monthly e-newsletter, which provides a direct link to each benefit.
In addition to the Select Online and Premium Online plans, ASCD will continue to offer hybrid print-online membership plans as well as the Basic Online membership option.
For more information or to join ASCD, go to www.ascd.org/membershipor call the ASCD Service Center at 1-800-933-ASCD (2327), and press 1.
