ASCD in Action

HireEd.net

Looking for that perfect job? Or that perfect educator to fill a job opening? ASCD has a new service for educators on the job market and for organizations that are trying to fill positions. HireEd.net is an online job bank and résumé-posting service, offered to ASCD members free of charge.
With HireEd.net, educators can post their résumés, search job openings online, and set up a search agent to automatically notify them through e-mail about job postings that match their qualifications. Employers can post positions on HireEd.net, search the résumé database, or set up an automatic search of the résumé database that will send information about qualified candidates to their e-mail.
HireEd.net will not be officially unveiled until ASCD's 1999 Annual Conference in March—but you can check out the service now as it gets started. Just go to http://www.HireEd.net or access the service through http://www.ascd.org. After the Annual Conference, the service will remain free for ASCD members searching for jobs, but employers will be charged to use HireEd.net, and non-members will be charged a small fee for setting up a search agent.
Résumé and job listings posted during the free trial period will stay on HireEd.net until May 10, 1999.

Only the Best

Only the Best is an annual, easy-to-use reference guide containing information on software programs and multimedia applications that have met Only the Best's criteria for excellence. Only the Best is a quick and easy way for curriculum directors, technology coordinators, librarians, teachers, school administrators, students, and parents to find the highest-rated materials available to meet their needs. By compiling information on materials in one convenient guide, Only the Best helps educators sift through the intimidating mass of programs now available and select those that are truly worthy of an A grade.
Published annually since 1985, Only the Best is now also available on CD-ROM and through the Internet. Only the Best 1990–98 Compilated Version on CD-ROM contains up-to-date information on more than 500 titles that were included in previous editions. The 1990–99 edition will be available in spring 1999.

Partners in Health Update

A new ASCD initiative, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, will provide 10 grants to schools that partner with a public health organization to integrate public health issues into the curriculum. This program will be open to middle, junior high, and high schools. Members attending the 1999 ASCD Annual Conference are invited to attend an informational session on this initiative.

Brief Takes

ASCD's Forum on Commercialism in Schools, held in December in the U.S. Senate Dirksen Office Building, Washington, D.C., was moderated by ASCD's Diane Berreth. Panelists included Alex Molnar, Paul Folkemer, Brita Butler-Wall, Dan Fuller, Dan DeRose, and Vera Blake.
The panel addressed whether and how commercial arrangements influence students and the school curriculum, what policies and guidelines should manage commercialism in schools, and who in the community should make these decisions.
In attendance were staff from 19 U.S. Senate and 2 U.S. House offices, as well as representatives from major news services and educational organizations. The transcript of the forum is posted on ASCD's Web site.
Nicholas Tang from Singapore's Ministry of Education spoke at ASCD headquarters in December about the new Teachers' Network in Singapore. Begun in April 1998, the Network is a platform for teachers to improve practices through reflection and collaboration. See Thomas Budnik's article (p. 92) for more information.
The upcoming issue of ASCD Infobrief, due out in early March, will examine key policy issues and trends concerning technology in schools. To order this issue, contact the ASCD Service Center.
