Closing the Achievement Gap
In December 2001, education experts came together in Washington, D.C., to discuss ways to address disparities in student achievement at the National Press Club forum on “Reading & Race: Closing the Achievement Gap.” Panelists included Kati Haycock, director of the Education Trust; Pedro Noguera, professor in the College of Education, Harvard University; Hugh Price, president of the National Urban League; and Eleanor V. Horne, vice president of Educational Testing Service. Lisa Bintrim, associate editor for Educational Leadership, moderated the panel. The panelists discussed the causes of the gap in reading achievement and gave their recommendations for closing the gap—high-quality teachers, challenging curriculum, and high expectations for all students.
Writing for EL
Now is the time to start thinking about submitting an article to Educational Leadership for the 2002–2003 publishing year. Check out page 89 of this issue for upcoming themes. To obtain a copy of the Guidelines for Writers, send an e-mail to el@ascd.org or visit EL online at www.ascd.org.
ESEA Reauthorized
President george W. Bush has signed into law a final version of No Child Left Behind, the reauthorized version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The final shape of ESEA will largely be determined at the state level as states develop their own responses to the legislation. The participation of informed, thoughtful, and caring educators during this implementation process will help determine whether ESEA will serve the well-being of all of our students. To gain access to timely information about ESEA as implementation unfolds in your state, visit the special section of the ASCD Web site devoted to ESEA (http://focuson.ascd.org).
ASCD Network Spotlight: Restructuring Schools
For more information about reducing class and school size, check out the Restructuring Schools Network, which provides a forum for discussing the changing roles, responsibilities, and rules that are a part of restructuring a school. For more information, contact George Hollich (717/520-2998; hollich@mhs-pa.org).
Safe and Supportive Schools
The Learning First Alliance, a partnership of ASCD and 11 other education organizations, recently issued the report “Every Child Learning: Safe and Supportive Schools.” The report is a blueprint for making and keeping America's schools safe, supportive learning communities for children across the country. Copies of the report are $3 each, and can be ordered through the ASCD Online Store (www.ascd.org).
