Standards and Accountability

As the standards and accountability movement in the United States progresses, educators need to ensure that the promise of standards-based education can be realized by all students, says the Learning First Alliance—a coalition of 12 national education organizations, including ASCD. While supporting the widespread effort to raise standards, the Alliance has identified five areas that require urgent attention: alignment of standards, curriculum, and assessments; adequate professional development for teachers and principals; sufficient resources and support for each child to meet high standards; communication about the importance of standards and accountability; and balanced and comprehensive accountability systems. The Alliance's mid-course recommendations to address these concerns are available at www.learningfirst.org.

First Amendment Schools

The First Amendment Center—a nonpartisan, international foundation dedicated to free press and free speech for all people and an independent affiliate of the Freedom Forum—will launch the First Amendment Schools project with ASCD during this year's Annual Conference, March 17–19, in Boston, Massachusetts. The project is designed to transform the way schools model and teach the democratic principles of the First Amendment. A consortium of First Amendment Schools will be selected this fall to participate in this multiyear project.
Results of a poll that determined what U.S. educators know about the First Amendment as it applies to schools will be available after March 16 in the "News and Issues" section of the ASCD Web site (www.ascd.org). For more information, please e-mail 1stamend@ascd.org.

Join a Network

ASCD's Networks are member-initiated groups designed to provide opportunities for involvement and sharing of information related to a common professional interest. Several Networks address topics related to helping all students achieve: Accelerated Learning and Teaching; African American Critical Issues; Basic School Network; Indigenous Peoples Education; and Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Issues in Education. For contact information for these and other ASCD Networks, visit www.ascd.org.

ASCD Member Becomes U.S. Secretary of Education

All ASCD members are education leaders, whether in the classroom, school, or district, but one of our members has risen to new heights. Former Houston schools superintendent and new U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige has been an ASCD member since 1996 and a Texas ASCD member for more than 16 years.

NCATE Standards Ready for Review

ASCD has been working with the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to revise accreditation standards for educational administration programs. A draft of the revised National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards is ready for review and comment on the ASCD Web site at www.ascd.org/aboutascd/ncatestandards.html. Please e-mail your comments to acrawfor@ascd.org.
