ARLINGTON, VA—ASCD, a global education organization focused on empowering educators through professional learning, announces the recipients of the 2022 Emerging Leader Grants. The grants are awarded to action-oriented, student-centered, whole child-centric educators who are members of the ASCD Emerging Leaders program.
"It is important to continually evolve instructional approaches so that educators can meet the needs of their students and address the changes education systems are experiencing in today's post-pandemic environment. The hope is that these grants will help this group of educators create new approaches for teaching and learning that others can use to accelerate learning in their schools and districts," said Penny Reinart, Deputy Executive Director ASCD.
Recipients of the ASCD Emerging Leaders Grants are:
Isabel Bozada Jones, a coordinator of deeper learning at Reynoldsburg City Schools in Ohio, for her "Building an Advocacy & Influence Pathway, program" proposal. An online advocacy and influence-building toolkit with modules and resources that education leaders can use to document the impact of their work.
Donna Neary, a new language and social studies teacher for the Hamilton County, Tennessee Schools, and Apryl Taylor a program specialist in secondary social studies for the Orange County, Florida Public Schools, for their proposal "Embracing the Whole Child: Extending the WELCOME MAT (Masterfully Agentic-&-Actionable Teachers)" to help others easily implement ASCD's Whole Child Action by using ten proven creative strategies and practical techniques created by their team.
Carolyn Streets, a lead teacher for the Yale Education Studies Program in New Haven, Connecticut, and a social justice scholar at the Yale Center for Public Theology and Public Policy is developing "Building Equity in Pedagogy Social Justice" to implement training sessions for educators about how to promote collegial discussion, collaboration, and ideation on how social-political, economic, and power-systems favor or work against historically marginalized groups.
Angello Villarreal, a Spanish teacher for Freehold Township, New Jersey High School, is advancing support systems to provide safe spaces for students and staff to maintain their wellness and mental health. His project, "Supportive School Environments through Student Safe Spaces," advocates for the practical application of social-emotional learning and student wellness and takes a holistic approach to relationship building within a school community.
The grants are part of ASCD's Emerging Leaders program, an initiative that recognizes rising education leaders who are leading, influencing, and driving change in their schools, districts, and communities. All members of ASCD's 2022 cohort of Emerging Leaders were invited to submit proposals for grant consideration. When selecting, based on their work this year in one of five pathways. Applicants were encouraged to work with their pathways coaches in optimizing their proposals for submission. Grant recipients are required to report on their progress in the next eighteen months and will be invited to showcase the results of their work on the ASCD Community platform.
