About the authors

Monique Couvson, EdD, who has published with us as Monique W. Morris, is an award-winning author and social justice scholar focused on education, civil rights, and juvenile and criminal justice. She is the president and CEO of Grantmakers for Girls of Color and the founder and board chair of the National Black Women's Justice Institute. She has written and lectured widely on research, policies, and practices associated with improving juvenile/criminal justice, educational, and socioeconomic conditions for girls and women of color.

Couvson is an executive producer and cowriter of the documentary Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, which is based on two of her books: Sing a Rhythm, Dance a Blues: Education for the Liberation of Black and Brown Girls and Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools.
