About the authors
John G. Gabriel is the author of the ASCD bestseller How to Thrive as a Teacher Leader (2005) and the article "What It Takes to Make a Teacher Leader" (EQ; 2005). He is currently an assistant principal at Park View High School in Loudoun County, Virginia. He worked in three other public school systems as an English teacher and then as a department chair before entering administration. He received his bachelor's degree from Mary Washington College, graduating with honors in English and Education. Gabriel also holds a master's degree in Educational Leadership from George Mason University. A nationally known speaker and presenter, Gabriel has presented workshops and staff development sessions at ASCD conferences and symposiums and for various school districts. He can be reached at

Paul C. Farmer started in public education in 1982. During his career, he has worked in public schools in Montgomery County, Maryland, and Fairfax County, Virginia. He is a seasoned school administrator who has successfully implemented affordable school reform strategies. He has held the positions of teacher, support team leader, department chair, teacher specialist, assistant principal, principal, and project director of instructional technology integration in the superintendent's office of Fairfax County Public Schools. He earned his bachelor's degree in Business Management at National Louis University and his master's degree in Educational Leadership from George Mason University. He is the Chief Executive Officer for Leaders in Education Achieving Results Nationwide, LLC (L.E.A.R.N., LLC). He is a seasoned presenter and staff developer, providing educational consulting services to school-based teachers and administrators as well as central office staff in school systems throughout the United States and Canada.
