About the authors
Warren A. Nord received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. Since 1979 he has taught the philosophy of religion and been director of that university's Program in the Humanities and Human Values. He is the author of Religion and American Education: Rethinking a National Dilemma (1995), a comprehensive study of historical, philosophical, constitutional, and pedagogical issues relating to religion and education. Charles C. Haynes is Senior Scholar for Religious Freedom at the First Amendment Center and serves on the Board of Directors of the Character Education Partnership. He was a principal organizer and drafter of a series of consensus guidelines on religious liberty issues in public schools endorsed by leading religious and educational organizations. Dr. Haynes is the author of Religion in American History: What to Teach and How (1990) and Finding Common Ground: A First Amendment Guide to Religion and Public Education (1994). He holds a master's degree in religion and education from Harvard Divinity School and a Ph.D. in theological studies from Emory University.
