ASCD in Action

Breaking the Cycle of Violence

ASCD has joined more than 20 other major national organizations to cosponsor a series of videoconferences on "Lessons Learned: Breaking the Cycle of Violence II." The first videoconference, "Acting on Early Warning Signs," aired September 21. The next, scheduled for 4 p.m. on October 19, is "Comprehensive Prevention Planning" and features model community-school collaborations that have effectively created caring environments. The third conference, "Containing Crisis: Managing School and Community Emergencies," will air at 4 p.m. on November 30. For more information, contact the Hope Foundation at (812) 337-7703.

The Family Education Network

ASCD has teamed up with the Family Education Network (FEN) to expand resources for teaching and learning to parents—the child's first teachers. FEN is an Internet-based network of families, schools, and communities dedicated to helping parents prepare their children to learn.
As part of our alliance, ASCD is providing quality content to the FEN Web site so that parents may have access to the best information available. The ASCD topic page within the FEN site has material on such topics as standardized testing, brain-based learning, and back-to-school basics. ASCD also provides materials and information to TeacherVision.com, a part of FEN focused on supporting the classroom teacher's work.
In addition, ASCD is cosponsoring with FEN a series of online discussions for and with parents. "The Standardized Test Craze," moderated by Educational Leadership author and testing expert Jim Popham, was the first in the series.
Look for ASCD at FEN's Web site (http://www.familyeducation.com).

All ASCD Topic Packs have been recently revised and updated to include the latest articles and resources. Call the ASCD Service Center or visit ASCD's Web site for more information.
