A young designer models her creation in Maria Rosa Key's bilingual 1st and 2nd grade classroom-turned-carnival at Thousand Oaks Elementary School in Berkeley, California. A volunteer artist helped students create the masks as part of a larger study on the role of celebration in diverse cultures. "We make an effort to weave the arts throughout the curriculum," Keys says. The masquerade continued when the children wore their disguises in a local Halloween parade.
