Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.—Harper Lee (said by Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, 1960)
Reading is a window on the word for the 5th grade girl and the 2nd grade boy sharing a book in the cross-age mentoring program at Winans Academy of Performing Arts in Detroit, Michigan. Winans, a charter school in its third year of operation, serves nearly 400 K–7 students. In addition to core academic studies, students participate in drama, dance, and music programs. Teacher Elana Luberto captured this image.
