November 2020: The Early Grades
Supporting Early Learners
You know what is inspiring? Engaging in meaningful conversation and collaboration around EL magazine's most recent publication, supporting early learners, with leaders of the work.

Because I have such a long history with ASCD, I know the vast array of publications, and EL magazine still remains my favorite. I purchased an ASCD site membership this year for my school (which is customized for our needs), and we are doing monthly virtual PD with articles from EL themed issues. My teachers are learning why I love this resource so much, and they are very excited about the rare Early Grades theme! (We are also doing a book study with 1–2 of the member books they get with the membership.)

This is a great resource for our leaders supporting the early grades. There's a lot to dig into—from equity to teaching strategies and ideas on how to care for our students during these times.

Keeping the "Class" in Classroom Management
I never have thought of classroom management as a way to teach your students how to care for one another. ["Classroom Management as a Curriculum of Care" by Carla Shalaby] is such an interesting read.

Because We Care
This is one of the wisest and most beautiful articles I have ever read about caring for our students ["In a Time of Calamity, What Do Children Need from Us?"]. Thank you Justin Minkel! Recommended for educators of all ages.

Helping Young Readers
Used this article today from Nell Duke to lead conversation ["When Young Readers Get Stuck"]. We agreed to prompt for word identification, meaning, and application.
—Sarah Camden (@CamdeSar)
Wonderful article! We plan to use it in our upcoming PD sessions! Thank you Nell Duke and EL magazine for giving us the solid research exactly when we need it!
—Habits of Literacy (@HabitsofLit1)
The incredible charts from Nell Duke's publication are about to become colorful sticky notes! This article needs to be read by every literacy educator. It's balanced, fair, and thought-provoking.

Young, Curious … and Online
EL nailed it with this important discussion ["Teaching Young Children Remotely" by Wendy Ostroff]. Remote learners need opportunities to interact, collaborate, and socialize!
