Do teachers make a difference in how much and how well students learn? For anyone who has ever had an outstanding teacher, you know, emphatically, that the answer is yes. What we've known intuitively all along, we now know empirically: there is a direct, measurable link between teacher effectiveness and student success. In recent years, an empirical base has been developed which clearly indicates that the quality of teaching is a major determinant of gains in student learning. Teacher quality matters if we hope to improve our schools and increase student learning. And the questions we should ask are: What do effective teachers do, and how do we identify those qualities most desired in the best teachers? This presentation will feature the latest research-to-practice findings detailed in the 2018 ASCD book, Qualities of Effective Teachers, 3rd Edition.

About the presenter

James H. Stronge is president and CEO of Stronge & Associates Educational Consulting, LLC, an educational consulting company that focuses on teacher and leader effectiveness with projects throughout the United States and internationally. Additionally, he is the Heritage Professor of Education, a distinguished professorship, in the Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership Area at the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia.

He teaches doctoral courses within the School of Education's Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership (EPPL) Program, with a particular focus on teacher and leader effectiveness, human resource leadership, legal issues in education, and research design.
